“I learned not only what I needed to know in order to become an effective teacher but I also learned how to see individuals such as students equally no matter what their backgrounds may be.”

1) How did the program prepare you to work as an elementary school teacher?
The elementary education program at UNC Charlotte prepared me as a teacher in many ways. I was able to gain experience in different grade levels throughout the years by completing house in different clinical placements. I was able to understand education in a different way that would allow me to become an effective teacher but taught me to cater to those that needed an extra push to get where they needed to be. I learned not only what I needed to know in order to become an effective teacher but I also learned how to see individuals such as students equally no matter what their backgrounds may be.

2) How did the program help you to meet the needs of your students?
I was taught effective way to differentiate instruction based on the needs of my students. For example, if I had students that read at a low level I differentiated the activity by providing visuals or sitting down one-on-one with the students. For those with a high reading level I would differentiate by giving more challenging questions that asked why and how which allowed me to see the comprehension of the student. Using different manipulatives and directing instruction in different ways was the moment important part that allowed me to be an effective teacher.

3) To what extent and how did faculty support you during your time in the program?
I knew I could always count on my professors and those who weren’t my professors but played a huge role in my education. I always had a person that could answer my questions and guide me in the right path when it came to a difficult scenario. All of my professors at UNC Charlotte strived to make the road to the career of my dream as successful as they could. I would not have enjoyed my college experience without their support, not just academically but also seeing the passion that they put into their classes everyday was extremely inspiring.

4) Anything else you would like to add?
This is not an easy career or something that you chose to do because you get summers off. This is a career that will inspire small children or adolescents that will become the future. Be ready to enjoy the ride and have moment where you feel overwhelmed but in the end it’ll all be worth it. You’re going to touch so many lives year after year!
